International Thriller Receives Four National Book Awards

Read Flower of Heaven, honored at 2013 New York Book Festival

Kirkus Indie Reviews recently released their rating on Flower of Heaven as an intriguing thriller that spans the globe. The romance and danger juxtaposed with universal twists and confused identities create an interesting read.

It's a thriller that doesn't quit. From his serene parish in Lincoln, Rhode Island, Father Richard Merrill had led a seemingly quiet life as a man of the cloth, shepherding his flock toward the solace of a higher power. Now, the core of his beliefs and his being is propelled into the darkest chaos. What's more, it's all for the sake of his very own flesh and blood, two sons who were long ago given up for adoption. Their mother, Francoise Dupont, a former gallery director at the Louvre, has since married an Arab prince. And herein lies the trouble. The bloodlines of the sons place them in line to succeed her gravely ill husband, now the king. More than a few of the king's enemies are consumed with stopping them from ascending to the throne.

With help from the FBI, the CIA, and an aging mercenary, the race is on. From France to Haiti, the United States, and the Middle East, Merrill will take whatever measures necessary to save his sons and unmask the scent of the Flower of Heaven. With evocative detail, high-flying action, and ingenious plot twists, Flower of Heaven is a searing, brilliantly crafted literary debut that will keep readers hungry for every enthralling page. It's a heart-stopping work that spans continents, while mining the deep channels of the human heart.

What a great read!!! The author quickly and intimately connects you with each character and then takes you on a thrilling odyssey of both romance and international intrigue. This is the first time that I have read a book from cover to cover almost nonstop, and anxiously did so because I had a burning curiosity to know what drama was going to play out in the next chapter. Mr Ayotte, you really nailed it, and I look forward to your next novel.
P.S. I bought the Kindle version for my wife and I, and am now buying the paperback version for my non-techie relatives whom I know will thoroughly enjoy this fine novel. Buy this book--you will not be disappointed!!

I found the characters interesting and we'll developed. Their life situations were believable. The whole story moved quickly. I only wished a bit more time had been spent describing the beautiful city of Paris in more detail. I enjoyed this story which ended too soon. There was plenty of action and drama! I need to find other books by Ayotte! I read this one in about 24 hours.
This novel captured my attention in the beginning, and then my heart. Such a blessing came out of all the tragedy, turmoil, guilt, shame, and pain. We don't always take to heart what the what the scripture says, "therefore is no condemnation to those who love the Lord". We tend to forget Christ went to the cross for all our sins, yet we punish ourselves as if it couldn't mean ours. I have been guilty of this same scenario with the exception my child was not killed and I didn't marry a monarch, or good man. Yet God blessed me with great children despite my unbelief in the power of the blood she'd on the cross.
This book could have been an ABC Monday night movie of the week. Besides being utterly predictable the book reads like a posting of events. The author tells you about the main characters families, their parents, how their parents met, how they met... but he doesn't show you. He simply writes it down. By the time you finish reading this book you don't care about these characters, there's no character development of any kind; you're left laughing at the complete absurdity of the whole story and you have to wonder why you wasted your time. I hate to be critical but this is not a story for anyone who's look for a complex plot or characters. It's not even a good beach book.
A simple story with a couple very improbable situations. Writing often clumsy and co use some skillful editinfG. Nice people though so a pleasant read.
The first sentence of this novel made me think that the Author, was a native
or Rhode Island,,, then further on, of Lincoln,RI then certainly from
Woonsocket ,RI. I asked myself "What good Author can com
out of such a place?" I kept reading and at the end of Chapter 2
where I was convince that I was reading a novel of a special Author. The
last sentence of that chapter, made me say Wow,Wow,Wow. And
I was hooked.
What a story, what surprises, and what a good
convincing Writer. I could not put the book down, and each
new Chapter was a new piece of the Puzzle. The characters
were well described, and the Puzzle became so compete...
I was so proud of such a Writer where I was living...
in Woonsocket.
At the end, I was in tears at the puzzle's end..
I do not want to spoil the story for any reader
a the book! I look forward to the Sequel.
Thank you,Julian.
I enjoyed this book which was easy to get into even with the building of several different characters. It was well plotted and moved along well which kept my attention. I even found myself emotionally involved and moved by several passages.
I think of this as more of a drama than a thriller because it was not the heart pumping intensity of a thriller. I'd still recommend it as an international mystery slash drama. I have already downloaded the sequel and will start it immediately.
4 1/2 Stars is my actual rating.
With it's carefully developed characters and settings ranging from global to local, this is the kind of book that you will finish in two...maybe three sittings. My wife and I recently read it on vacation in 2 days. If you are from Rhode Island, it is even better because of all the local references. If you have ever been inside a rectory or in New England during the winter, you will know what I am talking about.

Character development in Flower of Heaven is especially good. You will get to know the characters as well as you know some of your friends. One of the differences between a good book and a really good book is visualization. In Flower of Heaven, your mind's eye takes you to more places than most people will ever go. You will have the same experience that the characters do. All authors shoot for this, but most fail. This one didn't. For the entire time that you are reading, you experience new and exciting things. I have never been to Paris, but now I have a very intimate knowledge of it. I don't know if the author ever lived there, but it certainly feels like he did.

From Paris, France to Lincoln, Rhode Island you will not be disappointed.
